Question
Help me with these three statistics problems!
For the table below which of the following are true? I. The sum of the values of all the conditional distributions must be 1 Il. Temperature and crime rate appear to be related (the warmer the temperature, the higher the crime rate) IIl. The conditional distribution for Normal Crime Rate is roughly similar to the marginal distribution Temperature Crime Rate Normal Above Temp Below Normal Above Below 12 35 41 24 O I only O Il only O Il and Ill only OIll only I and Ill onlyExplanation / Answer
Before we answer the next question let's just make the probability distribution table by dividing all the terms in the table by their grand mean.
Question 6.
Let's analyze all the statements first.
Statement I :- If we put the condition below temperature then the sum of conditional probabilities is 0.17 which is clearly not 1, thus statement I is clearly incorrect.
Statement II :- As the temperature goes up the crime rate doesn't necessarily goes up as it is evident from the probability distribution table. Thus statement II is also incorrect.
Statement III :- If we take the ratio of conditional distribution of Normal crime rate and the marginal distribution of temperature , the ratio is same and hence the statement III is correct.
Hence the correct option is III only.
Question 7.
Again we will refer to the probability distribution table created at the beginning.
Statement I :- To check this we simply look at the last row which represents the above average temperature. Here the maximum probability is when the crime rate is above average thus the statement is correct.
Statement II :- Here we have to look in the second column, Since the maximum probability is in the second row , this statement is also correct.
Statement III :- Here we look at the third column, since the maximum probability is in the second row of the third column, the statment is incorrect,
Therefore the correct option is I and II only.
Question 8
Hospital B may have higher rate individually but when combined the number of patient is also taken into consideration.
Hence the correct option is The number of patients in good or poor condition.
Crime Rate Temp. Below Normal Above Total Below 0.08 0.05 0.03 0.17 Normal 0.23 0.27 0.16 0.67 Above 0.03 0.05 0.09 0.17 Total 0.34 0.37 0.29 1.00Related Questions
