Question

Must be answered in 4 sentences or more: The Cheerios commercial claims that eating their cereal can reduce one's risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol. If you were to conduct a study to determine exactly whether this might be true, how might you test this hypothesis? To do this, first, define the null and alternative hypothesis. Second, define the target population(s). Third, explain what type of comparison(s) this study entails --for instance, are you attempting to find a proportion within a single population, to compare between two populations, or to compare paired data.

Explanation / Answer

Null hypothesis will state that the cholestrol level remains the same as before, after the consumption of Cheerios cereals and the alternative hypothesis will state that the cholestrol level is reduced after the consumption of Cheerios cereals. The target population is initially people who do not consume Cheerios cereal and we measure their cholestrol levels. Then we make them consume Cheerios cereals and measure cholestrol levels again.

This is a kind of comparison where we compare paired data, that is, comparing cholestrol for the same individual before and after consumption of Cheerios cereal.
