Question
A box contains 8 red blocks, 3 white blocks, and 1 blue block A block is drawn at random. Find the probability that it will be a blue block A block is drawn at random. Find the probability that it will be a red block A block is drawn at random. Find the probability that it will be a blue or white block. Create an area diagram that represents this probability experiment. Is there more than one way to create such a diagram? Explain why or why not. A block is drawn at random and is NOT pul back into the box. A second block is then drawn at random from the box. Given that the first block was ' red, what is the probability that the second block will also be red? Suppose two blocks are drawn at random, one after another, without replacement. What is the probability of drawing a blue block and then a red block ? Is this the same probability as drawing first a red block and then a blue block? Why or why not? Suppose three blocks are drawn at random, one after another, without replacement. What is the probability of getting firs, a red block, then a block, and then a blue block ?Explanation / Answer
TOTAL WE HAVE 12 BLOCKS
8 = RED, 3 = WHITE, 1 = BLUE
A)PROBABILITY IT WILL BE BLUE BLOCK = NUMBER OF BLUE BLOCK/TOTAL BLOCK = 1/12 = 0.083
B)PROBABILITY IT WILL BE RED BLOCK = NUMBER OF RED BLOCK / TOTAL BLOCK = 8/12 = 0.66
C) PROBABILITY IT WILL BE BLUE OR WHITE BLCOK = TOTAL BLUE + TOTAL WHITE BLOCK/ TOTAL BLOCK
= 4/12 = 0.33
E) 1ST BLOCK PICKED = RED
THEREFORE TOTAL BLOCK LEFT AFTER 1ST = 12 -1 = 11
TOTAL RED BLOCK LEFT = 8-1 = 7
PROBABILITY THAT 2ND BLOCK IS RED = TOTAL RED BLOCK LEFT/ TOTAL BLOCK LEFT = 7/11 = 0.636
