Question

4. You desire to do a study of likely voters in Michigan to determine whether they would support the reinstatement of the death penalty for those convicted of murdering public safety officers. a) Formulate 3 pertinent questions that would be useful to ask in a survey, along with possible answer choices for your respondents (don’t ask for demographics…no questions on gender, age, etc.). Why would you ask these questions? b) To whom would you distribute your survey? Why would this be an appropriate sample group? c) What kind of literature base would you use to underlie your statistical information? Cite three examples of relevant scholarly literature. Be very specific about all of these answers.

Explanation / Answer

a) Survey Questions can be:

1. Is any of your family member or relative a public safety officer ?

Options can be Yes/No

This question can identify whether a person is biased or unbiased towards his/her famiy member if he/she is a public safety officer.

2. What punishment should be given to those convicted of murdering public safety officers ?

Options can be: Death penalty, Life without Parole, a fixed term prisonment, others etc

This question helps us to identify the possible punishments which the public wants for the convicted.

3. Do you support the reinstatement of the death penalty for those convicted of murdering public safety officers?

Options can be Yes/No

This question helps us to identify the percentage of people who would support reinstatement of the death penalty.

c) Literature of Sampling methods and techniques and Survey design can be used in this case. (Simple random Samping might help here on the population of likely voters of Michigan)

d) Literature on sampling:

1. Sample survey methods and theory' by Morris H. Hansen, William N. Hurwitz, William G. Madow

2. Survey Research Methods, Floyd J. Fowler

3. Survey Sampling, Leslie Kish
