Question

You are studying a developing neuron which is functionally immature. The cell experiences the following ionic concentrations. What is the Nernst equilibrium potential for each ion (at room temperature, T = 25 degree C)? Calculate the resting membrane potential (at room temperature, T = 25 degree C). You expose the cell to a treatment known to play a role in neuronal maturation. The resting potential subsequently becomes more negative by 15 mV. The cell is likely becoming more permeable to which ion(s) relative to the others? Justify your answer in relation to the Nernst equilibrium potential for each ion. Is this cell more or less likely to fire an action potential from the resting potential with an applied stimulus when compared with a cell with a more depolarized resting potential? Explain your prediction.

Explanation / Answer

Immune Responses distinguish according the invasion of foreign particles. The immune system differentiates two groups of foreign substances. One group includes of antigens that are liberally circulating in the body. These comprise molecules, foreign cells, and viruses. A second group comprises of self-cells that display abnormal Major Histocompatibilty proteins. Abnormal MHC proteins can instigate from antigens that had engulfed and busted down; these call as exogenous antigens. They also include virusinfected and tumor cells that are vigorously synthesizing foreign proteins which called endogenous antigens. The two different immune responses on the basis of foreign invasion are humoral response in which mainly B cells are responsible and Cell-Mediated in which T cells are responsible.
