So this is something in math I actually think I will want to know how to do in life, but I cannot for the life of me remember how to set this problem up. The problem is:

Robert knows from reading his syllabus that the average of his chapter tests accounts for 60% of his overall grade. He also knows that he final exam counts as 40% of his grade. Suppose his test average is 89%. Determine the range of grades that he could need on his final exam to get an "A" in the class (90% or better). Then determine the range of grades he would need on his final exam to get a B in the class (80%-90%).

his test = 89%, 60% of 89 = 89(0.6) = 53.4 let x be the percent he needs for final to get an A: x >= (90-53.4)/40 he will need at least 90-53.4 = 36.6 out of 40% 36.6/40 = 91.5% so the range he will need to get an A = 91.5% - 100% or anything >=91.5% to get a B: (80-53.4)/40
