Question

You are following a group of nomadic canoe fishermen. They travel up and down a river spear fishing for a short time in each "fishing hole" before moving on to try their luck in the next hole. They sleep wherever they stop fishing each day. Each morning they wake up and begin fishing in the closest fishing hole. After a short time they continue paddling upstream to the next hole where they also spear fish. The fishing holes are spaced about 15 minutes apart on average. If fishermen usually fish for about 4 hours per day, and we assume their goal is to maximize the amount of fish they get during that time, how long should a fisherman stay at any one fishing hole given the following data from a large set of fishing holes?

Foraging return rate = Kilos / (time traveling + time fishing at hole)

Time spent at hole Total Kilograms fish captured
3 min 24 kg
5 min 38.4 kg
7 min 49.9 kg
9 min 58.7 kg
11 min 62.5kg
13 min 65 kg
15 min 65.9 kg
17 min 66.2 kg

If you find in general that men actually stay 17 minutes at fishing holes, what is one possible reason? (you cannot just say that the above data are wrong, that is, that the travel time is longer or return rates are different).

Time Equation ?? Return Rate???
3 minutes
5 minutes
7 minutes
9 minutes
11 minutes
13 minutes
15 minutes
17 minutes

Explanation / Answer

Based on what you said above it seems as if you just need to follow the equation you provided: Foraging Return Rate= Kilos/(Time traveling+time at hole) So... 24 kilos/(15 minutes traveling+3 minutes at hole) = 1.3 38.4 kilos/(15 minutes traveling+ 5 minutes at hole) = 1.92 and so on.... I don't understand the second part of your question.
