The domain of a logarithmic function must always be greater than0. So whatever you are taking the log or ln of, in thiscase, x2 -1 > 0 must give you a number greater than0. So, in this case, x2 > 1, whichmeans x > 1 or x < -1. Anything bigger than 1, squaredminus the 1 will give you a number bigger than 0 to take the logof. The same hols true for x < -1.
