Question

Determine the direction of the force (if any) that will act on the charge in each of the following situations A negative charge within an electric field that points to the left A positive charge within an electric field that points upward. A negative charge moving upward in a magnetic field that points out of the screen. A positive charge moving out of the screen in a magnetic field that points to the left. A negative charge moving downward in an electric field that points into the screen. A positive charge moving upward in a magnetic field that points downward.

Explanation / Answer

1) Electric field lines start at positve charge and end at negative charge. If the electric field is start from left to right and field lines points toward left then the force on negative charge is toward right that is opposite to the electric field.

2) A positive charge in electric field which is start from down to upward and the field lines point toward upward then the force on positive charge is toward upward.

3) Magnetic force on a moving charge is given by lorentz force law. magnetic force is perpendicular to magnetic field and velocity of the charge. so the force on negative lie on a plane of screen and perpendicular to magnetic field and velocity of the charge(Right hand rule).

4)Now force on the postive charge will upward as disscussed above.

5) No force will act an negative charge as their electric field component are perpendicular to each other.

6) As disscussed above the force on a particle moving in a magnetic field is given by lorentz force law . Therefore the angle is 180 degree. Therefore no forces will act on the particle.
