Question
This is a question from my math homework for tonight which Idon't know how to do: Find the number of units sold that yields a maximumannual revenue for a company that produces health foodsupplements. The total revenue R (in dollars) is given by theformulaR = 900x - (0.1x^2) , where x is the number of unitssold. I don't even know where to start because today was the firstday of doing this and I don't understand the process or routine ofsolving these kinds of problems. Also, the examples we did inclass today had to do with area and perimeter and not prices. Please help! Explanation / Answer
Ok for this question you are looking for the maximum. I am assuming this is not a calc class so I will not show you theone simple way. To do this problem, you can graph the equation and follow theequation to its maximum. This equation forms and upside down U. If you do not have a graphing calculator you should pick a fewpoints when x>0. 1 close a few far and some really far. Look forwhere you get the largest answer. Then chose points closer tothat. Another way is to use the formula x=-b/2a y=ax^2 +bx+c b=900 a=-.1 so x = -900/ (2(.1)) = 4500 By searching for the highest point, you will get a maximumrevenue at x=4500.
