Question

I dont really get how to set up this problem can you pleasehelp? In Plate Tectonics, the movement of plates is analyzed by means of directed line segments (vectors). Suppose that three plates are arranged as shown in the figure below. The velocity of plate T relative to plate F measures how plate T would be moving if you were standing on plate F. This velocity is indicated by the arrow FT rightarrow. The length of this arrow is the speed of T relative to F. and the direction of the arrow indicates the direction in which T is moving relative to F. If FT rightarrow = 4.3mm/yr in the direction N90 degree E, and TA rightarrow = 2.3mm/yr in the direction S29 degree E, then find the speed and direction of plate A relative to plate F.

Explanation / Answer

The reason you got 4.3cos(90)= -1.93 and 4.3sin(90)=3.844 isbecause the mode of your calculator is in radians mode.while the problem is in degree mode. To change mode on a graphing calculator press the mode key that is directly to the right of the 2ndbutton. you should then see a bunch of stuff. press the up and down keys until you find the words radian anddegrees in the same row. just go over the degree button and press enter. then press 2nd and the mode button to quit the screen now try the problem again and see if you get he same thing asme. Hopefully this helps.
