Question

Hello, I am a middle schooler trying to finish my homewrok, andcannot figure out what equation to use to solve this question. I'mclose, but I just can't seem to figure it out. Can anyone help meplease? The question is from a worksheet. The question is : Adulttickets for the senior class play are $4 and student tickets are$2. A total of 1250 tickets were sold with a value of $3400. Howmany student tickets were sold? I'm still not certain if this can be solved becasue I'm notsure I have enough info to answer. Usually there is additional infolike "there were 2 times as many student tickets as adult ticketssold", but this question had no other info. I also thought thatmaybe the equation was 4(X) + 2(X)= 3400                                                                                              ------------                                                                                               1250 but that didn;t work. I would appreciate any suggestionsanyone has. Thanks, Chris Thank you to everyone who answered my question. My teacherwants us to only use one variable....is that even possible withthis question? Explanation / Answer

Well, you are on the right track by making an equation based onwhat the problem tells you. However since the adult tickets and thestudent tickets have different prices, you will need to make twodifferent variables; one for the adult tickets and one for thestudent tickets and then create an equation like the one you have. That is the equation for the total value of the tickets sold. Thenyou can use those same two variables and make an equation for thetotal number of tickets sold. With two equations and two unknowns, you can then solve for the variable which you put as the studenttickets.
