Question

How do you calculate the point of intersection. I amgetting stuck. I know that you have to set both equationequal to y and then set the two equations equal to eachother. But I am getting confused with carrying it out. Can you calculate it step by step. x + 5y = -5 4x-3y = -20 How do you calculate the point of intersection. I amgetting stuck. Explanation / Answer

x+5y=-5       [1steqtn] 4x-3y=-20    [2ndeqtn] ~~~~~~~ STEPS::: 1)) The easiest way that i learned to answer these problems isto first get a single variable alone (either will work) Using eqtn1 and the x variable you get: x= 5y-5. ~ 2)) Plug in what we got for x, (5y-5), into the 2ndeqtn. (This eliminates a variable and makes it possible tosolve) 4(5y-5)-3y=-20 ~ 3)) Determine the y value of the intersection 20y-20-3y=-20 17y=0 17y/17=0/17 y=0       [now so far we know the intersection is (x,0) ~ 4)) Now finish it off by using the y value, (0), andplugging it into either eqtn (i'll use eqtn1 since its easiest)& determining the value of x in the intersection!! x+5y=-5 x+5(0)=-5 (*since 5x0 is 0 that makes it easy*) x=-5     [now weknow the intersection is (-5,0)] ~~~~~~ FINAL ANSWER::: (-5,0) ~~~~~~ Hope this helps you out!!
