Question

Problem #3 A total of 800 shafts must be produced in the lathe section of a machine shop during a particular week. Each shaft is identical and requires a standard time Tstd 11.5 min (machine time plus worker time). All of the lathes in the department are equivalent in terms of their capabilities to produce the shaft in the specified cycle time. (a) How many lathes and lathe operators must be devoted to shaft production during the given week, if there are 40 hours of available time on each lathe.

Explanation / Answer

Production time of 1 shaft = 11.5 minutes

Number of shafts produced in 40 hours or 2400 minutes = 2400/11.5

= 208.7 Shafts

And we have to produce 800 shafts,

As, we can see that 1 lathe with 1 worker can produce 208.7 shafts in 40 in a week, so, 4 lathes with 4 workers would be enough to produce 800 shafts in a week.

If u found this useful, then a thumbs up would be really appreciable
