Question

1. Determine whether th e underlined values are a parameter or a statistic and explain why. (a) In a survey of 250 adults, 58% were females. (2 pts) (b) 8% of GCC students are graduate students. (2 pts) 2. Classify the variables as qualitative (categorical) or quantitative. If a variable is quantitative, also state if it is discrete of continuous. a) The colors of houses in Los Angeles. (1 pt) b) The number of seats in Ramos' class. ( 2 pts) c) The numbers on the shirts of a boy's soccer team. (1 pt) d) The bank account numbers of the students in a class. (1pt) The temperatures of cups of coffee served at StarBucks. (2pts) weight of a player on the wrestling team. (2 pts)

Explanation / Answer

1)
Parameters
are numbers that summarize data for an entire population. Statistics are characteristics of a small part of the population i.e. sample.
(a) It's a statistic because it has been arrived at by examining a small sample of people, not the entire population.
(b) It's a parameter, since each and every GCC student has been taken into account while carrying out the survey.

2)
a) Colors are categorical variables, hence qualitative.
b) Number of seats is a quantitative variable. Since number of seats can take only positive integer values, it is a discrete variable.
c) Again, quantitative variable. And, since t-shirt numbers are positive integer values, it's a discrete variable
d) Bank account numbers are again quantitative variables, and also discrete.
e) Temperature of a cup of coffee is a quantitative variable which can be floating points too, hence it's a continuous variable.
f) Weight is a quantitative variable. Since weight can be a floating points, it's a continuous variable.
