An investigation was undertaken to explore the hypothesis that women are more persuaded by emotional appeals while men are more persuaded by rationality. The experimenter presented an emotional communication on a specific social issue to 50 women and 50 men, and measured how attitudes changed from before the communication to after. Results indicated that women changed their attitudes to a significantly greater degree than did the men, leading the experimenter to conclude that the hypothesis was supported.

The flaw is the Design of the research

Based on the hypothesis: women are more appealed by emotional aspects and men are more inclined by rationality

The sampling design covered the experiment of emotional appeal and concluded that female are more influenced by it as compared to men

Whereas the second part of the research, the experiment to prove the hypothesis related to rationality influence is not covered in this particular design

The sampling design must be such that it is able to cover and verify the stated hypothesis of the researcher completely and thus provide a reliable decision. In the given scenario the decision is partially proven, but the other aspect of the hypothesis is not addressed by this design. Hence this design of the research is incomplete and unreliable.
