Question
) Read the research abstract below. Then identify: a) the independent variable b) the levels of the independent variable c) the dependent variables d) the measurement scale for one of the dependent variables (identify which DV) e) whether that DV is continuous or discrete Objective: This study was designed to test whether the pre- and postprandial response of key appetite hormones differs in normal weight (NW) and severely obese (SO) women. Design, Setting, Participants, and Intervention: Twenty three women ages 25–50 were recruited for this study including 10 NW and 13 SO. The study was conducted in a hospital-based clinical research center. Following a 12-hour fast, participants had a baseline blood draw and then consumed a moderately high carbohydrate meal based on body weight. After the meal, participants had blood samples drawn at 0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Primary measures included pre- and post-prandial Outcome Measures and Analysis: Total ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin and insulin were measured before and after the meal. A repeated measures general linear model was used to evaluate the hormone changes by group and time (significance p 0.05). Results: As expected, leptin levels were 150-200% higher in severely obese women when compared to normal weight women, both before and after the meal. Conversely, ghrelin levels were 30-40% lower in severely obese women when compared to normal weight women.
Explanation / Answer
a.) Independent Variable => Weight of the women
b.) Levels => Normal Weight (NW) and Severely Obese (SO)
c.) Dependent Variables => Ghrelin, Leptin, Adiponectin & Insulin Levels
d.) Measurement Scale for Leptin Levels => ng/mL
e.) Leptin levels is a continous type of variable.
