Question
I am trying to write a discussion for statistics in healthcare class, this is the question:
"Present two different types of data, or variables, used in the health field. Examples could be blood pressure, temperature, pH, pain rating scales, pulse oximetry, % hematotcrit, minute respiration, gender, age, ethnicity, among many others. Then classify each of those variables as qualitative vs quantitative as well as nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio and justify your classifications. Finally, explain one type of analysis that could be done with one or both of the variables you selected."
would the Glasgow coma scale be considered qualitative or quantitative when using it for statistics? What would be another type of data to compare it to in the emergency room setting? Thank you for your help, Kristin
Explanation / Answer
Answer to the question)
Let the two chosen variables be:
.
Temperature is quantitative and interval scale ( since there is no true zero value that exists in case of temperature)
Age is quantitative and can be considered to have ratio scale
Glasgow coma scale is qualitative and ordinal. Since each rating indicates a type of consciousness in the patient, the ratings are mere indication of such categorical types
It has three parts eye, verbal and motor
The pluse rate can be checked along with it or the blood pressure. All these are important parameters to completely analyse the movement and strain it causes in the body
