Question

1. State whether you would use proportionate stratified sampling or disproportionate stratified sampling in the following scenarios. Explain your reasoning.

a. Sheryl is conducting a study comparing the health of Asian women over 60 in Orange County with the rest of population. However, only 1% of Orange County is made up of Asian Women over 60.

b. Researchers at the Social Science Research Center want to ensure their study on religious life among L.A. resident truly represents the actual racial demographic in L.A. L.A. is made up of 47.5% Hispanic or Latino residents of any race, 29.4% non-Hispanic whites, 10.7% Asian, 9.8% Black or African American, and 2.6% other or mixed race.

Explanation / Answer

Firstly i will explain,

What is the difference between proportionate stratified sampling or disproportionate stratified sampling,

Proportionate stratified sampling: Proportionate stratified sampling is a type of stratified sampling . In proportionate stratification, the sample size of each stratum is proportionate to the population size of the stratum. This means that each stratum has the same sampling fraction .

And

Disproportionate stratified sampling: Disproportionate stratified sampling is a type of stratified sampling . In disproportionate stratification, the sample size of each stratum does not have to be proportionate to the population size of the stratum. This means that two or more strata will have different sampling fractions .

a. Sheryl is conducting a study comparing the health of Asian women over 60 in Orange County with the rest of population. However, only 1% of Orange County is made up of Asian Women over 60.

Ans: In question a, They give same chance to each strata, that's the reason we can apply here Proportionate stratified sampling.

Ans: In question b, They give unequal chance to each strata, means 47.5% Hispanic or Latino residents of any race, 29.4% non-Hispanic whites, 10.7% Asian, 9.8% Black or African American, and 2.6% other or mixed race, that's the reason we can apply here Disproportionate stratified sampling.
