Question

Previous Problem List Next 1 point) One of the most feared predators in the ocean is the great white shark. It is known that the white shark grows to a mean length of 18 feet and that these heights follow a normal distribution. However, one marine that great white sharks off the Bermuda coast grow much longer. To test this claim, full grown white sharks were captured, measured, and then set free. However, this was a difficult, costly and very dangerous task, so ony four sharks were actually sampled. Their lengths were 22, 24, 24,and 21 feet. Do the data provide sufficlent evidence to support the claim? Use a 0.01. (a) Calculate the test statistic: t (b) Find the critical value: to (c) The final conclusion is OA. Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Given in this question

Population mean = 18

Sample mean = (22+24+24+21)/4 = 91/4 = 22.75

Standard deviatjon of sample 1.5

Standard error = 1.5/sqrt(4) =0.75

So tstat can be calculated as

= (22.75-18)/1/5= 4.75/1.5= 3.166

Tcrit can be calculated as here degree of freedom = 4-1 =3

It is a single tailed test so alpha = 0.01

Tcrit value from t table = 4.5407

As we can see that tcrit> Tstat so we are failed to reject the claim. So there are sufficient evidence to support the claim.
