Question

Question5 It has been hypothesized that overall academic success for college freshmen as measured by grade point average (GPA) is a function of IQ scores. Xi, hours spent studying each week, X2. and one's high school average scores, X;. You collect data on these variables from the BUS105 class of 30 students, and aim to analyse and determine factors that affect the GPA (a) Based on the following scatter plots, comment on the relationships between GPA (dependent variable) and respective independent variables (IQ, studying hours, and high school scores) (3 marks) GPA vs Ia 4 0 50 100 150 GPA vs Studying hours 10 20 30 50 GPA vs High school score 20 100

Explanation / Answer

First of all the three graphs provided have ill scaling pattern, as a result nature of scatter diagram is not so clear. I mean to say that scale on X axis in GPA VS IQ ranges between 0 to 150, whereas there are NO data points below roughly 60 and above roughly 130. If the proper scale had been used then scatter will exhibit nice pattern and helps lot in concluding from it. Similar case is with other graphs too. Anyway the answer to questions posed are as follows;

The scatter plot of GPA Vs IQ shows that the overall trend depicted by the data is linear positive, hence one can comment that GPA and IQ has positive correlation. In other words high IQ will come up with high GPA.

The scatter plot of GPA Vs Studying hours shows that the overall trend depicted by the data is linear positive, hence one can comment that GPA and studying hours has positive correlation. In other words high more hours of study will give high GPA.

The scatter plot of GPA Vs high school score shows that the overall trend depicted by the data is linear positive, hence one can comment that GPA and high school score has positive correlation. In other words students in high ranking school will expected to have high GPA.

Yet these conclusions are explanatory in nature and requires the support of hypothesis testing the purpose of confirmation.

Thank you.
