Question

research a keystone species example and explain how this species helps preserve biological diversity in an ecosystem.

Some biologists think protecting keystone species would help preserve biological diversity in an ecosystem. Do you agree or disagree? Support your answer with research and examples.

Did you define the concept of keystone species?

Did you pick an example of a keystone species and explain why it is considered a keystone species through research?

Did you include at least two sources of information other than your textbook in your response?

Did you support your answers with examples?

Explanation / Answer

Keystone species are the species their role in their environment has a greater effect than other species. Keystone species are necessary for maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem through species diversity and organization.

Yes, protecting keystone species would help preserve biological diversity in an ecosystem. As predators, sea otters are critical to maintaining the balance of the near-shore kelp ecosystems. Without sea otters, aquatic animals they prey on would completely destroy the kelp forests, which will result in the decrease of other animals that depend on kelp. Thus, protecting sea otters population would preserve biological diversity of the aquatic ecosystem.
