Question

You can submit a 3 to 5-page, 12 point font, essay on The Most Significant Contribution(s) of a Mathematician (of your choice). The paper should include some context on the mathematician's life. The paper must have a minimum of 5 references, at least 3 of which are not internet references. The references must be cited (format of your choosing), and there should be at least one reference per paragraph as this is a factual paper. Please make sure not to plagiarize. Direct quotations are acceptable. Cite the content of every sentence if necessary. There is a link to information on how to avoid plagiarizing in the Syllabus.

I have attached a "rubric" which describes the characteristics of an A, B, C, D, or F paper. You will be graded on 5 categories, Ideas, Coherence, Support, Style, and Mechanics. Each category will be equally weighted. The grade will replace your lowest Proctored Exam Grade, or your MML Quiz Average, whichever results in the highest overall average.

Explanation / Answer

   ARYABHATTA - THE MATHEMATICIAN

In the ancient era when other of the world was in the dark age, a person in the sub continent named aryabhatt had made an extraordinary contribution in the field of maths and astrology.

BIRTHPLACE- There is debate over the birthplace of aryabhatt. Many scholar belief that aryabhatt was born at patliputra[Patna, BIHAR] and he was the head of nalanda university. It is also believed that here only he studied the astronomy. But according to K. chandra Hari[sr. geoscientist] aryabhatt lived in ponnani at the northern coastel belt of kerala.

WORK- During gupta era, he contributed maths with the invention of zero, plane trigonometry and spherical trigonometry, algebra and arithmetic.

Aryabhatiya is the written on the aryabhatt and his contribution but the name aryabhatiya was not given by him. Aryabhatiya contain 108 verses as it's name refer the same and it is divided into four chapters- 1.Gitikapada-talk about the large units of the time

2.Ganitapada- covers the measurings arithmetic and geometric progession

3. Kalakriyapada -contains the different units of time and method for determining the positions of planets for a iven day

4.Golopada- covers the trigonometric aspects of the celestial sphere features of the ecliptic celestial equator, shape of the earth, cause of the day and night.

Aryabhatt had huge impact on the iraian scholar , they had developed various treaties and books based on the knowledge and work of aryabhatt. Among those Abu-rehan al biruni was on the forefront.

MATHEMATICS- place value system and zero

The french mathematician IFRAH argue that knowledge of zero was implicit in aryabhatt's place value system. There are many advantages of zero it had made thing easier to remember and to calculate, earlier roman system was used in place of it which made it difficult to learn and write.

Another important work of aryabhatt is trigonometry, Aryabhatt discussed the concept of sine. As we know arabic writter were influenced by his work had translated his work from sanskrit into arabic, they refered sine as jiba. sine which literally meam half-chord.

Aryabhatt used the word asanna[approaching], to mean that not only is this an approaximation but that the value is irrational. this approximation was mention in al-khwarizmi's book on algebra. In aryabhattiya , aryabhatt provided elegant results for the summation of series of square and cubes.

Most major work of aryabhatt was certainly on astrology. he worked on the motions of solar system, ecilipse, sidereal period heliocentrism.

In the first chapter of the aryabhatiya where he gives the number of rotation of the earth in a yuga and made more explicit in his gola chapter.Aryabhatt clearly mention in his text that earth rotates about it's axis daily which among the few reaons for season in the modern day results shows.he also mention that the apparant movement of the stars is relative motion caused by the rotation of the earth. his theory on the relative motion can be seen as an adventure at that time but it was not so true because later relative theory was implicitly and explicitly developed by einstein. Aryabhatt described geocentric model of the solar system in which the sun and moon are each carried by epicycles. epicycles was used to explain the varitions in the speed and the direction of the apparent motion of the moon and sun. the motion of the planets are each governed by two epicycles , a smaller manda and larger sighra . the order of the planets in term of distance from eart is taken as -moon, mercury, venus, sun, mars, jupiter, saturn.

Eclipses model developed by him is the core for the latter day astrologers .Aryabhaat was among the first to aknowledge that eclipses occurdue to shadow caused by moon and sun .

the brief equation which are developed by him to calculate eclipse duration was aknowledged by various scientists acroos the globe. He explained eclipses in terms of shadows cast by and falling on earth.

CONCLUSION -Aryabhatt's astronomical calculation methods were also very influential.trigonometry knowledge of him is also widely used .India had established various university in honour of him at patna and allahabad. India's first satelitte aryabhatta and the lunar crater aryabhatta are named in his honour.Research instiution in nainital is also named after him . this show the contribution of him inthe field of mahematics. Today we donot have to be detrimental about the invention rather we should put forward over Research and development so that we can again develop the science which make us proud.
