Question

Answer the following questions:

What causes the erosion at Lake Erie?

What can be done to prevent erosion? List some examples and methods.

Should people be allowed to erect control structures to protect their property from erosion? Explain why or why not?

Where do these erosional issues occur in the state of Florida?

Should we be allowed to build and live along the shoreline in high erosion areas? Explain why or why not?

Respond to at least two other posts that differ from your own opinion. Are they for or against near-shore building? Is there a middle ground or a compromise?

Explanation / Answer

CAUSE OF EROSION AT LAKE ERIE

the strong waves and other environmental forces have changed the Lake Erie shoreline.A large amount of sand has been swept away from the coastline. There is an abnormal increase in the water level of the Lake. When a large storm blows across the Lake huge powerful waves develop and crash on the shore

TO PREVENT EROSION

The Lake Erie Shore Management Plan is being developed as a part of the ongoing efforts to assist property owners along Lake Erie. This plan aims to promote successful means of controlling erosion by developing erosion control recommendations, based on regional site conditions.

The LESEMP divides the coast in regions and reaches which are shore area with similar environmental condition in terms of erosion

The LESEMP identifies the cause of erosion in each reach. It then outlines the most prevailing means of erosion and finds out ways to control it

ANSWER 3) YES. The people should be allowed to build control structures to protect their property

a) A Shore Structure Permit must be obtained before the construction of an erosion or wave and flood control structure along shoreline

b)These structures can resist the force generated by the strong waves and prevent damage

ANSWER 4) Florida has a total of 36.30 miles of beach line.10 2 miles are already eroded.

CAUSES- a) Tropical storms, like Hurricane is a big factor for erosion. In Southern Hemisphere. This causes sediment transport from the shoreline

b)Increase effect from wave heights from man-made structures like seawalls and Revetments. These two structures produce a reflection of wave. The superposed wave is oh very high magnitude causing destruction of shoreline.

ANSWER 5) We should not be allowed to build and live in high erosion areas.

EXPLAINATION) High erosion areas are prone to landslide .

Damage of properties and buildings due to shifting of shoreline in coastal areas

Huge wave attack might be faced in coastal erosion zones

Loosening of sediments are common in erosion prone areas, which might be a threat to humans. Downsagging of an area might occur.
