Question

In a recent poll of 1000 adults, 55% of the respondents said that the use of marijuana should not be made legal. In the same poll, 20% of the respondents said that the use of marijuana purposes should not be legal. If the sampling method is designed as following: The US is partitioned into regions with 1000 adults in each region. Then one of those regions are randomly selected and all 1000 people in that region are surveyed. What type of sampling would be this be? If the survey is made by a telephone poll, and 1000 people responded. What type of sampling would this be? Stratified, Systematic, clustered, or convenience? Is the given value of 55% a statistic or a parameter? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Solution :

a) Cluster sampling: In this sampling ,we divide the entire population into natural groups or clusters. The clusters are often geographic. Make a random selection ofclusters. Include every member of each selected cluster in the sample.

Here we are given that, US is partitioned into regions with 1000 adults in each region and then one of those regions are randomly selected and all 1000 people in that region are surveyed. So this is Cluster sampling.

b) Convenience sampling: Create a sample by using data from population members that are readily available.

Here ,survey is made by a telephone poll, and 1000 people responded that is peoples who are readily available ,so this is convenience sampling.

c) The difference between a statistic and a parameter is that statistics summarises data from a sample and a parameter summarises data from an entire population. And here we are given that from a sample of 1000,55% respondents said that the use of marijuana shoulde not be made legal,so here given value 55% is a statistics.
