If the samplying method is desinged as following: The US is partitioned into regions with 1000 adults in each region. Then one of those regions are radnomly selected and all 1000 people in that are are surveyed. What ype os sampling would this be?

Is the survey is made by telephone poll, and 1000 people responded. What type of sampling would this be?

Systematic sample?

Clustered sample?

Convenience sample?

Is the given value of 55% a statistic or a parameter? Why?

Among the 1000 individuals, how many said that the use of marijuana for medical purposes should not be legal?

Explanation / Answer

1) option a: Stratified Sampling: Since the 20 adults each are taken from each state (strata) this type of sampling is Startified Sampling.

2) option c: Cluster Sampling: Since the researcher partitioned the US into regions with 1000 adults in each region (clusters) and then chose one of those regions radnomly in which the entire 1000 people in that cluster are surveyed.

3) option d: Convenience sampling: As this is made up of samples that are easy to reach. This is a type of non probability sampling.

4) The given value of 55% is a statistic as the poll is on 1000 adults and not on the entire population. The difference between a statistic and a parameter is that statistics describe a sample while a parameter describes an entire population.

5) 20% of 1000 adults said that the use of marijuana for medical purposes should not be legal. Therefore 200 adults said that the use of marijuana for medical purposes should not be legal.
