Question
1. An investigator conducted a study to compare the quality of life of breast cancer survivors measured using a quantitative score (SF-36) between patients who received a psychological intervention (n-50) versus those who received standard care (n-52). The data in each group seems reasonably normally distributed but the variances are not equal (one group has 4 times larger standard deviation than other group). Which procedure should be used for comparing two groups? a. Student's t-test b. Welch t-test c. Student's t-test on log transformed data d. Wilcoxon rank sum testExplanation / Answer
Solution: (b) Welch t-test
In this problem we will use the Welch’s t-test which does NOT require the assumption of equal variance between populations.
Welch's t-test, or unequal variances t-test, is a two-sample location test which is used to test the hypothesis that two populations have equal means.
But other test given in (a), (c) and (d) not aplicable because basic assumption not satisfying in this problem.
