Question

Suppose you have 36 observations, the smallest andlargest of which are 139.6 and 287.2, respectively. Apply the accompanying procedure to choose classes for cutpoint grouping. Use eight classes. Choose the class width by rouding the calculated approximate class width up to the nearest multiple of 5. Choose the lower cutpoint of the first class by rounding the calculated approximate class width up to the nearest multiple of 5. Choose the lower cutpoint of the first class by rounding the minimum observation down to the nearest multiple of 5.

Explanation / Answer

Answer to the question is as follows:

139.6 to 287.2 have to divided into 8 classes

So, width . of buckets = (287.2-139.6)/8 = 18.45 or 20 is the bucket width ( rounding off to nearest 5 multiple)

The lowest cutpoint is nearest 5multiple near 130.1 i.e. 130

Now,

130-under 130+20 --> 130- under 150 ( since we have to round off 130.1 to 130 and 153 to 155)

150-under 150+20 --> 150- under 170

170-under 170+20 --> 170- under 190

190-under 190+20 --> 190- under 210

210-under 210+20 --> 210- under 230

230-under 230+20 --> 230- under 250

250-under 250+20 --> 250- under 270

270-under 270+20 --> 270- under 290
