Question

Write 4 paragraphs and Include examples to support your answer: Plants and animals do not operate independently of one another. In fact, it is how these organisms interact that often defines form and function. Ecology is the branch of biology that focuses on these species interactions with each other in the habitats that they live. In light of the many human induced changes to the environment, it would be impossible to study ecology without accounting for anthropogenic effects. Assume you are an ecologist studying local flora and fauna in San Diego. Describe the effects of human development in a local habitat (e.g. coastal, desert, chaparral, grassland, wetland, etc.). How will continued global climate change effect species adapted to a specific environment? What conservation and management measures could be implemented to protect native species in San Diego?

Explanation / Answer

Human impact on the environment or anthropogenic impact on the environment includes changes to biophysical environments and ecosystems, biodiversity and natural resources caused directly and indirectly by humans, including global warming, environmental degradation, mass extinction and biodiversity loss.Modifying the environment to fit the needs of society is causing severe effects, which become worse as the problem of human overpopulation continues. There is no doubt that human civilization has had a negative impact on biodiversity, particularly since the industrial revolution.Overfishing and hunting, the destruction of habitats through agriculture and urban sprawl, the use of pesticides and herbicides, and the release of other toxic compounds into the environment have all taken their toll, particularly on the species living in the different habitat. With such significant habitat destruction underway, the effects on ecosystem and wildlife are significant. Most plants and animals live in areas with very specific climate conditions, such as temperature and rainfall patterns, that enables them to thrive.Any change in the climate of an area can affect the plants and animals living there. For example, some North American animals are moving farther north or to higher elevations to find suitable places to live.Direct or indirect actions by humans have resulted in the decrease of biodiversity. Global warming is the phenomenon whereby the planet is experiencing a gradual increase in the overall temperature of our atmosphere. It is most widely believed to be due to increased levels of certain gases and pollutants, such as carbon dioxide and CFC's,causing what is commonly known as 'greenhouse effect'.Together with other human caused problems, global warming can therefore severely affect animals, plants and birds.Beyond habitat displacement, many scientists agree that global warming is causing a shift in the timing of various natural cyclical events in the lives of animals-pattern called phenology. Many birds have altered the timing of long held migratory and reproductive routines to better sync up with a wadue to warming climate. And some hibernation animals ending their slumbers earlier each year, perhaps due to warmer spring temperatures. San diego country is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the nation because of its complex coastal, foothill mountain and desert climates and variation in elevation and geology.San diego is home to many native species of reptiles, fish ,insects, birds, mammals and plants, along with a population of more than 3 million people-the second most populus country in California and the fifth most populus in the united states. For the past 20 years ,the country of San Diego Department of parks and recreation (DPR) has worked to preserve undeveloped land through its multiple species conversation program (MSCP).The MSCP protects large, contagious areas of habitat to benefit endangered species and allows for incidental take Authorization for those listed species without the need for separate federal or state permits.Notable species in San Diego protected by the plan include the California gnatcatcher, golden eagle,San Diego thornmint, least Bell's viero,Stephens 'Kangaroo rat, burrowing owl,and the san Diego fairy Shrimp. One of the major goals of the MSCP was to develop a well-designed ,large, connected system of preserves that retains ecological functionality and allows for natural dispersion of plants and wildlife across the landscape.San Diego preserves parks and campgrounds offer many opportunities for people to be active outdoors, promoting healthier, happier lifestyles. The attractions and exploration opportunities include interpretive trails to learn about cultural and biological resources.
