Question

THE FLUID MOS?AC MODEL Label the parts of the plosma membrane in the diagram below. Use the toble on the right to help you if needed 7. 6. Why is the cell membrane also known as a "phospholipid bilayer?" 7. Glycolipids and glycoproteins have what type of molecule attached to them? 8. How many layers of phospholipids makeup the plasma membrane? 9. The cell membrane is both fluid and asymmetrical. Discuss asymmetry of the plasma membrane, as well as the enzyme involved. Explain properties that contribute to the fluidity of the cell membrane? 10. Give one way in which active transport differs from facilitated diffusion. 11. Label the following diagram:

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 - the cell membrane is also known as the phospholipid bilayer because it contains two phospholipid arranged tail to tail. So one segment of the membrane has two phospholipids, and bi means two, hence the term phospholipid bilayer.

Ans2 Glycoprotein - as the name suggests, there is an oligosaccharide chain (glycans) covalently attached to amino acid side-chains. This a post-translational modification of the protein. This process is called glycosylation

Ans 3 Same as the first question. There are two layers of phospholipids. (hint: name suggests a bilayer and bi means two )

Ans 4 The plasma membrane contains different elements attached towards the inner side and the outer side. This is what is meant by the asymmetry of the plasma membrane. On the outer side, there are glycolipids and glycoproteins found (to cite an example) whereas on the inner side you will have peripheral proteins.

Membrane fluidity is determined by the following factors
