Question
A discrete variable can take on only the values 0,1,or 2. A set of 20 measurements on this variable is shown here: 1,2,1,0,2,2,1,1,0,0,2,2,1,1,0,0,1,2,1,1
A) Construct a relative frequency histogram for the data.
B) What proportion of the measurements are greater then 1?
C) What proportion of the measurements are less than 2?
D) If a measurement is selected at random from the 20 measurements shows, what is the probability that it is a 2?
E) Describe the shape of the distribution. Do you see any outliers?
Explanation / Answer
Ans: a) A relative Frequency histogram of the data shows the following :
Value Frequency
0 5
1 9
2 6
b) The proportion of measurements greater than 1 is 6/20 = 3/10
c) The prorportion of measurements lesser than 2 = 14/20 = 7/10
d) The probability that an observation is a 2 = 6/20 = 3/10
e) The shape of the distribution is a wave, there are peaks and troughs. There are no outliers.
