QUESTION 10 The figure as an attachment depicts the concentration of urine in the collecting duct in the kldney (part A) and the release of sweat from the sweat gland (B). Aquaporins (AQPs) play a role in both the short-term and long-term regulation of water balance as wef as in the pathophysiology of water balance disorders. 1. Describe the importance of AQP in these two processes and the effects of an AQp deficiency n each case. (1 pts) 2. How in the kidney related to the effect of an AQP (2 pts) would you approach the drug development process? 1) Aquaporins are integral membrane protein that transfer serve as channel in transfer of water, and in some cases small solute across the membrane. They are conserved in bacteria, plant and animal. AQP3 and 2 present in the kidney collecting ducts and AQP5 present in secretary cells such as sweat gland.
Aquaporine maintain water permeability needed in the kidney proximal tubule for concentrated urine. It help in isomolar fluid absorption, in the desending loop of henle for counter current multiplication and in the collection ducts, for water absorption.
Deficiency of AQP in kidney lead to excessive urine output and imapired urine concentrating ability. Reduction in transepethelial osmotic water permeability and impairement of fluid absorption lead to luminal hypotonicity at the end of proximal tubule.
AQP facilitate epithelial fluid secretion in sweat gland. Its deletion lead to slow rate of sweat secretion. Sweat secretion means transport of salt and water into the lumen of secreting coil of sweat gland.
