Question

Deductive or Inductive

1. Decide whether the following arguments are inductive or deductive in nature. Explain why.

(a) Suppose that every day that the sun does not shine, it rains. Today is cloudy, so it must be raining.

(b) The sun has always risen in the morning. So tomorrow it will rise in the morning.

(c) Whether I like it or not, tomorrow will come. So tomorrow will come. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

2. Decide if each of the following deductive arguments is valid.

(a) If I don't pass my driving test, I won't have a license. I passed my driver's test, therefore I have a license.

(b) If the stoplight is either green or yellow, I can legally proceed through the intersection. The stoplight is red, so I cannot legally proceed.

(c) If I cook the eggs too long, they will be dry. The eggs are not dry, so I did not cook them too long.

Explanation / Answer

1

a)Inductive

The statement says that "that every day that the sun does not shine, it rains" and Today is cloudy, so it must be raining. The conlcusion doesn't logically follows. It may be just cloudy and not raining right now.

b)Inductive

The sun has always risen in the morning is just an observation according to the given statement. We can't guarantee the given conclusion based only on the given statement. Hence, the conlcusion doen't follows logically.

c)Deductive

Statement says tomorrow will come. The conclusion also says tomorrow will come. No confusion.

2.

a) Not valid. Even if I pass my driving test i might not have license because of under age or other issue.

b) Not valid. The statement only says that "If the stoplight is either green or yellow, I can legally proceed through the intersection." It doesn't say anything about Red signal. Be careful, don't confuse truth with validity.

c)Not Valid."The eggs are not dry"can be due to various reasons. What if somebody poured water after cooking too long.
