Question

A plane is doing a parabolic wieghtless flight to train astronauts. The plane gets up enough speed to shut off it's engine when it gets on a arc with radius of 1 km and glide to the top of the semicircle, where the gravity must be zero. What must the velocity be when the plane turns off the engines?

What must the velocity be when the plane turns off the engines?

Explanation / Answer

Here centrifugal force must be equal to gravitational force..

therefore

m*v*v/r = m*g m cancels out

v^2=g*r

v^2=10*1000 m2s-2

v=100 m sec-1

where v is the velocity
