Question
A 30 mass % solution of sodium chloride in water is diluted to 5 mass % through the addition of pure water. Using a basis of calculation of 100 kg for the initial solution, you are tasked with finding the mass of the added water, the volume of the added water, and the mass of the final solution. In what order should you solve for these quantities? Hint: as always, drawing a flowchart will help to organize your thinking. Mass of the added water Mass of the final solution Volume of the added waterExplanation / Answer
Mass of solution initially(M)=100Kg.
Mass of sodium chloride(m)=.30*100=30 kg
Mass of water(m')=100-30=70kg.
let mass of added water=M(add).
now solution becomes 5% by mass of Nacl.
or, 0.05= 30/(100+M(add))
or, M(add)=500kg.
hence mass of added water=500 kg.
mass of final solution=100+500=600 kg.
volume of added water= mass added/density of water = 500/1000 m^3=0.5m^3 =500litre.
