Explanation / Answer

1. Nicholas Steno's most famous contribution to geology is his Law of Superposition which states that in an undisturbed sequence of strata the older layers are usually deposited first and are found at the bottom of the sequence while the younger layers are deposited at the top above the older layers. His another famous principle was the principle of horizontallity which stated that sedimentary rocks are laid down in a horizontal manner.

2. Two of William Smith's most important contributions to geology were that he produced a geologic map of England in which he successfully demonstrated the principle of faunal succession and its validity. The principle of faunal succession states that fossils are found in rocks in a very definite order.

3.The beginning of Phanerozoic is marked by the beginning of life. It coincides with the appearance of animals that evolved exoskeletons.

4. The three divisions of the Phanerozoic Eon are:

5. Zoic means animal.

Cen means recent.

Meso means middle.

Paleo means ancient.

6. The major group of animals that dominated the Mesozoic Era were the Dinosaurs. Hence, the Mesozoic Era is known as the "Age of Dinosaurs".
