Question
14. The Cascade Range is a long series of stratovolcanoes that extends from Mount Lassen in northern California through the states of Oregon and Washington. These are considered active volcanoes, although none are erupting at the moment. Use plate tectonics theory to briefly explain why there are active volcanoes in this region of North America. Include in your answer the names of the specific lithosphere plates involved at this location. (For this answer, there is no need to explain the difference between shield volcanoes and stratovolcanoes.) (4 points) 13. Mona Loa is a gently sloped, shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mount Rainier is a steep sided, potentially explosive stratovolcano in the state of Washington. Why are stratovolcanoes steeper and more explosive than shield volcanoes? (2 points) This question is about the shapes of volcanoes. In order to avoid duplication in your answers, read question 14 before answering this question.
Explanation / Answer
Casacade range located in the Western margin of the Northern America. It is a seismically active zone as it is a complex zone of benioff and the transform/ trancurrent zone. Thus, the movement of pacific oceanic plate and the continental margin make it connected to the erruption of the volcanoes. Though it is not errupting but it is still in active condition.
Mona Loa is a gently sloped, shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is due to the specific lava coming out from it. It errupt melted basalt which is very less viscous and hving less silica content. Thus it forms lava pillow structure despite of steep edges. Also, they are the least violent volcanoes due to this properties.
Whereas Mount Rainier is a steep sided, potentially explosive stratovolcano. It is due to high content of silica material into it. It makes it more viscous and thus the rate of flow is very low. It makes it more violent and steep sloped volcanoes.
