Question

Suppose you worked for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and were given the task of assessing the ecological footprint of various institutions in Massachusetts. d.) What is the ecological footprint of the U Mass Boston (17,000 students) in terms of: Food Energy Water (In other words, how much land is required to supply the food (1) that is eaten by the 17,000 students going to UMassBoston? How much land is required to supply the energy (2) that students going to UMassBoston? How much land is required to supply the water (3) that is used by the 17,000 students going to UMassBoston? Please explain how you derived your 3 different answers)

Explanation / Answer

If I was worked for Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and given the task if assessing the ecological footprints of various institutions in Massachusetts.

d) Ecological footprint of the UMass Boston (17,000 students) in terms of

1.     Food

2.     Energy

3.     Water

Calculations are presented below

1.The land required to supply the food that is eaten by the 17,000 students going to UMass Boston

One student required food per day = 500 grams

One student food requirement per annum (300 working days)

                = 300 x 500 = 150,000 = 150 kgs

Food required for 17,000 students in a year

= 17,000 x 150 = 2,550,000 kgs = 2,550 tons

1 hectare land produce food/2crop/annum = ~16 tons

Land require to produce 2550 tons = 2550/16 = 159 hectares

Land required for to produce food for 17,000 students per annum = 159 hectares

2. The land required to supply energy that is used by the 17,000 students going to UMass Boston

Energy (electric power) required per student per day = 2.21.Kwh/day

Energy required per student per year (300 working days)

                        = 300 x 2.21 = 660 Kwh

Energy required for 17,000 students per annum

                = 17000 x 660 = 11,220,000 Kwh

Converting into MW in 300 days x 10 hours = 3.7 MW

So 3.7 MW power station we need 4 acres of land (apporx.)

3. The land is required to supply water that is used by the 17,000 students going to UMass Boston.

One student consumption of water per day =400 litres

One student water consumption in a year (300 working days)

                        = 400 x 300 =120,000 litres/annum

17,000 student water requirement per annum

                        = 17000 x 120,000 = 2,040,000,000 litres

                        = 2,040,000 cu.m.

So to supply water to 17,000 students per annum require 2,040,000 cu. m water accommodating tank land.
