The Characteristics which make Dominica susceptible to the Ravages of Hurricanes

The Caribbean region sits on “pins and needles” as the second half of the calendar year approaches. June 1st marks the beginning of the “wet season”, otherwise known as the hurricane season in the Atlantic. Hurricanes are severely powerful storms which develop over warm ocean waters. Several of these cyclones have “thrashed islands” within its path, dumping trillion of gallons of rain, causing irreparable damage to coastal ranges, devastation to infrastructure and loss of many living things from humans, agriculture and livestock. Recently, Dominica has experienced the impacts and effects of several major hurricanes leaving this island in need of assistance from neighbours and friends. Being the most northerly Windward Island, Dominica is susceptible to the ravages of hurricanes because of its geographical location, its warm tropical waters and peculiar trade winds.

Dominica’s geographical location among other islands lies within the hurricane belt in the Atlantic Ocean. This location places the island in a susceptible position with its longitude and latitude position being 15 degrees 25’ N and 61 degrees 20’ W respectively (Maps of the World, 2017). Revolvy (n.d) published that the area between 10 degrees and 20 degrees N is where the most hurricanes are created in any given season, because of the warm waters. Dominica is nestled comfortably within these coordinates. Outside of this range the Coriolis effect is not strong enough to create the tight circulation needed, and locations above this range provides temperatures which are too cool. Over the years, the island has been hit by category 1 hurricanes in 1915, 1915 and 1930, causing havoc within its path. In 1979, Dominica experienced its first Category 5 hurricane in the form of Hurricane David, where it took 40 lives and destroyed the country’s forestry and infrastructure. After 28 years Hurricane Dean made landfall in 2007 and destroyed over 125 homes as a result of landslides together with the Banana crop. It was later touched by Tropical Storm Erika in August 2015 causing damages of approximately $500 million according to Dr. Masters, (2017). Most recently in 2017, Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm crippled the Nature Isle, when within 24 hours, it morphed from a category 1 to category 5 storm.
