Climate Feedback Exercise There are two kinds of feedback mechanisms: A positive feedback mechanism occurs when an initial change is amplified by nature. In this case, some natural process causes the initial change to grow. For example: Bank Balance Increases Earn Interest-) Bank Balance Increases Earn More Interest Bank Balance Increases A negative feedback mechanism occurs when the initial change is diminished by nature. In this case, some natural process counteracts the initial change. For example: Body Temperature Warms You Sweat Sweat Evaporates Evaporation Cools Your Body > Body Temperature Cools. For this assignment, fill in the following blanks: 1. Earth Warms.. 2. Since Earth Warms, Ice Coverage Across the Earth 3. Since there is less ice, Earth's Albedo 4. Amount of Sunlight Reflected 5. Therefore, amount of sunlight absorbed 6. Since Earth is absorbing more sunlight, Earth's Temperature_ 7. Is this a Positive or Negative Feedback Mechanism? 8. If this process were to continue unrestricted, what would happen to Earth's Temperature?

Explanation / Answer

Earth warms Since Earth warms, Ice coverage across the Earth decreases. Since there is less ice, Earth's Albedo decreases. Amount of sunlight reflected decreases. Therefore, amount of sunlight absorbed increases. Since Earth is absorbing more sunlight, Earth's Temperature increases. This is a positive feed back mechanism as Earth's temperature is intensified by this process. If this process continues unrestricted than it will eventually leads to global warming. Earth warms Ocean Temperature increases. Therefore amount of evaporation increases. Amount of water vapour in the atmosphere increases. Additional water vapour condenses, meaning cloud coverage increases. More sunlight is reflected by clouds. Therefore less sunlight reaches the Earth. Earth's temperature decreases. This is a negative feed back mechanism as the increase in Earth's temperature is diminished by this process.
