Question

You are recruiting patients from a hospital for a case-control study. There are 250
patients (110 female and 140 male). 20% of the females and 20% of the males do not
drink alcohol. You decide to randomly choose patients to discuss the study goals.
Answer the following: What is the probability of selecting a female who does NOT drink
alcohol from the entire patient load? What are the odds of selecting a female non-drinker from the entire patient load? What are the odds of selecting a male non-drinker from the entire patient load? What is the probability of selecting a male non-drinker from the entire patient load?

thanks

Explanation / Answer

1) What is the probability of selecting a female who does NOT drink alcohol from the entire patient load?

110/250 chance that we select a female * 20/100 females that drink => 0.088 or 8.8%

2) What is the probability of selecting a male non-drinker from the entire patient load?

140/250 chance that we select a male * 20/100 males that drink => 0.112 or 11.2%

Note that these probabilities add to 20%, which is consistent with the percentage of drinkers given in the problem.
