2. The cathedral in Chartres, France (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres) is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in France. However, a view of the façade shows the cathedral to have two contrasting bell towers (spires). Explain the history of the building of the cathedral and its importance to pilgrims of the Middle Ages. When was each bell tower built and why are they different? Describe each bell tower in your own words, and list and briefly explain at least three other "Gothic" features of this cathedral (Note: This is NOT Notre Dame de Paris!) Chartres cathedral is built and decorated between 1134 and 1260, registered by UNESCO as a world Heritage site, it is the most complete and best preserved of the Gothic cathedrals. The current cathedral mostly constructed between 1194-1220 is the last of St least five which have occupied the site since town became bishopric in 4th century. The cathedral's association with the Virgin Mary the supposed veil of the Virgin is kept in the cathedral treasury made it the destination of pilgrims in the middle ages. Between 1507 and 1513 Jean Texier built a new bell tower, the only bells that the cathedral has are all hung in the bell tower of the North Tower.
