Question

Base your answers on the diagram above. You will submit your answers in a quiz format.

1. Which way (right or left) are the oceanic and continental plates moving?

2. Which is hotter, the piece of mantle material at Position A or at Position D? Explain your reasoning.

3. What direction are the pieces of mantle moving (up, down, left, right) at Positions A, B, C and D?

4. Just beneath point I is a tropical island. What will eventually happen to the island as the oceanic plate moves? Why?

5. Just beneath point C is an ancient impact crater on the ocean floor. What will happen to the crater as the oceanic plate moves? Why?

Explanation / Answer

1. Which way (right or left) are the oceanic and continental plates moving?

Oceanic plates moving to the right and continental plates moving to the left.

2. Which is hotter, the piece of mantle material at Position A or at Position D? Explain your reasoning.

The piece of mantle material at Position D is hotter as it is deeper and closer to the Earth center.

3. What direction are the pieces of mantle moving (up, down, left, right) at Positions A, B, C and D?

Position A moving to right

Position B moving down

Position C moving left

Position D moving left

4. Just beneath point I is a tropical island. What will eventually happen to the island as the oceanic plate moves? Why?

As the oceanic plate moves, the tropical island is will submerge and disappear as the plate is moving to the right and therefore will go below the continental plate.

5. Just beneath point C is an ancient impact crater on the ocean floor. What will happen to the crater as the oceanic plate moves? Why?

As the oceanic plate moves the ancient impact crater will subduct with the oceanic plate, and pulled under the mantle from the circulating flow. This occurs because circulation pulls under the continental plate. Therefore, ancient impact crater will pulled under continental plate. The oceanic plate to which it is attached is moving towards the continent and moving downward and there it collides with the continental plate.
