Question

AlwaysRain Irrigation, Inc., would like to determine capacity requirements for the next four years. Currently two production lines are in place for making bronze and plastic sprinklers. Three types of sprinklers are available in both bronze and plastic: 90-degree nozzle sprinklers, 180-degree nozzle sprinklers, and 360-degree nozzle sprinklers. Management has forecast demand for the next four years as follows:

Both production lines can produce all the different types of nozzles. The bronze machines needed for the bronze sprinklers require two operators and can produce up to 17,000 sprinklers. The plastic injection molding machine needed for the plastic sprinklers requires four operators and can produce up to 280,000 sprinklers. Three bronze machines and only one injection molding machine are available.

What are the capacity requirements for the next four years? (Assume that there is no learning.) (Enter the demand values in thousands. Round your answers to 2 decimal places.)

Explanation / Answer

YEARLY DEMAND 1 (IN 000s) 2 (IN 000s) 3 (IN 000s) 4 (IN 000s)

Plastic 93 115 130 141

Bronze 21 24 34 56

total available capacity for plastic sprinklers = 320,000 / year

total available capacity for plastic sprinklers = 3 * 20,000 = 60,000 / year

for year ' 1 '

we will be using 93,000/320,000 = 93/320 = 0.2906 of the available capacity for plastic in current year

or 0.2906 * 1 = 0.2906 machine

and

we will be using 21,000/60,000 = 7/20 = 0.35 of the available capacity for bronze in current year

or 0.35 * 3 = 1.05 machine

labour requirements for year ' 1 ' s sprinklers operation is plastic = 0.2906 * 3 = 0.8718

bronze = 1.05 * 2 = 2.1

for year ' 2 '

we will be using 115,000/320,000 = 23/64 = 0.36 of the available capacity for plastic in current year

or 0.36 * 1 = 0.36 machine

and

we will be using 24,000/60,000 = 2/5 = 0.4 of the available capacity for bronze in current year

or 0.4 * 3 = 1.2 machine

labour requirements for year ' 2 ' s sprinklers operation is plastic = 0.36 * 3 = 1.08

bronze = 1.2 * 2 = 2.4

for year ' 3 '

we will be using 130,000/320,000 = 13/32 = 0.406 of the available capacity for plastic in current year

or 0.406 * 1 = 0.406 machine

and

we will be using 34,000/60,000 = 17/30 = 0.567 of the available capacity for bronze in current year

or 0.0.567 * 3 = 1.7 machine

labour requirements for year ' 3 ' s sprinklers operation is plastic = 0.406 * 3 = 1.218

bronze = 1.7 * 2 = 3.4

for year ' 4 '

we will be using 141,000/320,000 = 141/320 = 0.4406 of the available capacity for plastic in current year

or 0.4406 * 1 = 0.4406 machine

and

we will be using 56,000/60,000 = 14/15 = 0.933 of the available capacity for bronze in current year

or 0.933 * 3 = 2.8 machine

labour requirements for year ' 4 ' s sprinklers operation is plastic = 0.4406 * 3 = 1.322

bronze = 2.8 * 2 = 5.6
