Question

Ocean & Coastlines What causes different coastlines to have different tidal ranges? How does wave refraction affect irregular coasts, such as ones with headlands? What is a tidal bulge and where does the bulge occur? How do shelled marine organisms form their shells? How does the Coriolis effect affect currents? What is a wave-cut platform? What is the role of plankton in the oceans? How many low and high tides do normal coastlines experience? What is a wave's wavelength? What ocean current did Benjamin Franklin help chart? How do deep-sea currents form? What is a wave base?

Explanation / Answer

Coastlines having different tidal range mainly depends on volume of water adjacent to coastline and the geography of the basin the water sits in. But actual tidal range depends on attraction between moon, sun and earth.

Wave refraction are mostly caused by friction with seabed causes the wave front in the shore to distorted or refracted, this waves are reduced with velocity, this reduced velocity may form bays.

Tidal bulge is the bulge in the ocean occurs when earth pulling towards moon by attraction then the water in the ocean also move towards the near side of moon and makes a bulge. one bulge occurs near side of the moon and another occurs far side of the earth

Shells of marine organisms are mainly formed by calcium carbonate, having two main forms calcite and aragonite, mantle tissue in contact with the shell secretes proteins and mineral extracellularly to form the shell.

Coastal currents are normally affected by wind, coriolis effect describes that due to earth rotation wind in northern hemisphere makes air towards right and southern hemisphere towards left. this causes the currents to deflect.

Wave cut platform is an lanform formed by erosion, when destructive wave hit the cliff, causes undercutting between high and low water marks, as a result of abrasion, corrosion forms wave cut platform.

Planktons are microscopic plants which plays a key role in oceanic food chain, photosynthesis are mainly done by plankton and also provide food for zooplankton in ocean.

Two high and two low tides are normally occuring in coastline

Wave wavelength is the measure of distance between two crest or trough of waves, to find the wavelength of waves then we have to find the speed of the wave and feaquency of the wave.

The first ocean current measure in gulf of stream done by banjamin franklin, observation and temperature calculation was first used in chart for ocean currents.

deep sea currents are formed by difference in water temperature and salinity

Wave base is the maximum depth at which wave passages causes the significant wave motion.
