Progressivism was a movement that was used to increase democracy in America by curbing the powers of corporations. It was to fight economic injustice and end corruption in the government and businesses and to bring equal rights for women and other groups.Intellectuals, political reformers, and journalists worked to form the progressive movement. Journalists stated and exposed the unfair conditions faced by factory workers, women and children. Intellectuals pondered why the dominant role of large corporations in America and political reformers struggled to make the government responsive. They just wanted to restore the economic opportunities and correct the injustices in American life. Their goals were to protect social welfare, promote moral improvement, create economic reform, and foster efficiency.

The major changes in the role and status of women during the progressive era was that many female industrial workers pushed for higher wages. Women reformers grew into reform groups that addressed issues such as temeprance and child labor.

Reformers brought about many changes in the area of child labor such as setting up schools for immigrant children so they could get an education. The National Child Labor Committee sent investigators to gather evidence of children working in harsh conditions and organized exhibitions with photographs the dramatize the children's dangers.National Association of Colored Womens merged by two earlier organizations and they managed nurseries, reading rooms and kindergartens. They were to improve conditions in the work place and home.National Women Suffrage Association united with another group in 1890 to become NAWSA

Three approaches women tried in order to win the right to vote and obstacles placed in the way of achieving this goal .Some obstacles that women faced were that the liquor industry and textile industry tried to stop them. They feared that women would vote in support of prohibition of alcohol and the textile industry feared that women would want to vote for restrictions on child labor. Men feared the changing role of women in society.Methods used by women were that women pushed for court cases to test the fourteenth amendment which declared that states denying their male citizens the right to vote would lose congressional representation. Also women pushed for a national amendment to grant women the right to vote.
