A researcher is interested in whether New Yorkers watch more TV than the average American. In the population, Americans watch an average of 34 hours of TV per week. A researcher surveys 28 New Yorkers and finds that they watch an average of 32 hours of TV per week with a standard deviation of 5. The researcher uses an alpha level of 0.01 (2.75 points) a. Is this a one-or two-tailed test? b. What is the null hypothesis? c. What is the alternative hypothesis? d. What are the degrees of freedom? e. What is t critical? f. What is su? g. What is the t statistic (t obtained)? h. What decision would you make about Ho? i. What can you conclude? i. What is the effect size? k. What does this effect size mean? 3. A researcher is interested in whether psychology students are less happy than other students. The mean happiness score for the population is 8. The researcher administers a happiness scale to 25 BC students and obtains a mean of 5 and variance of 49. The researcher uses an alpha level of 0.05. (2.75 points) a. s this a one- or two-tailed test? b. What is the null hypothesis? c. What is the alternative hypothesis? d. What are the degrees of freedom? e. What is t critical? f. What is u? g. What is the t statistic (t obtained)? h. What decision would you make about Ho? i. What can you conclude? i. What is the effect size? k. What does this effect size mean?

Explanation / Answer

1) Given that degree of freedom = 20 to find : t statistic (by using t tables)

(a) Bottom 25% is the value of t statistic i.e where p value = 0.25

= 0.6870

(b) Middle 80% = it is the middle section of the bell curve that exlcudes the 10% of the area on the left and 10% of the area on the right so, for middle 80% we need to look at the 90th percentile in the t table

which is 1.325

So, -1.325<t<1.325

(c) Middle 95% = for middle 95% we need to look at the 97.25th percentile in the t table

which is 2.086

So, -2.086<t<2.086

(d) Top 10% = 1.325

(e) Top 5% = 1.725

(f) Bottom 1% = 2.528
