Question

Question You are studying the relationship between a particular machine setting and the amount of energy consumed. The partial Minitab output of the simple linear model is given below. Regression Analysis: Energy Consumption versus Machine Setting Analysis of Variance Source Reg (Machine) Error Total DF Sum Squares Mean Square F-Value P-Value 28.50 148.41 28.50 1187.31 1215.8 0.19 0.673 a) How many data points (n) were used to fit this regression model? Using the Minitab output givena above, calculate R c) Calculate the standard error sE. Suppose the range of Energy Consumption values vary from 0 to 36. Does this model seem useful at predicting Energy Consumption? Why or why not? Justify your answer

Explanation / Answer

Each of the answers can be derived out of the table given in the question:

a. total data points = n = dftotal + 1 = 9+1= 10

b. Rsquare = (SSreg/SStotal) = 28.50/1215.8 = .023441

c. Se = sqrt(SSerror/df) = sqrt(1187.31/8) = 12.183

No, the model has a sigificance of .673, look at the p-value. Since p-value is more than .05, we conclude that the model is insignificant. And hence, we can't use this regression model to predict Energy consumption.
