-21 Please use the following to answer questions 19 The following information was abstracted from two recently released reports and are presented below City of New York report and the New York City Annual Table 1: Summary of Vital Statistics 2009: the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Statistics 2009 Bronx Manhattan General Population Characteristics Mid-year population Persons living with HIV/AIDS (as of 12/31/2009) # of live births to teenagers (under 20 years old) 1,628,900 32,000 1,000 9,652 1,397000 23,000 2,000 8,691 Total number of deaths Deaths due to select causes 21 2,000 1,000 400 Deaths among infantsExplanation / Answer
Proportionate Mortality Rates (PMR) for HIV/AIDS Deaths
PMR(HIV/AIDS) Manhattan = (Deaths caused by HIV/AIDS in Manhattan / Total deaths from all diseases) * 100
= (400 / 9652) * 100 = 4.14
PMR(HIV/AIDS) The Bronx = (Deaths caused by HIV/AIDS in The Bronx / Total deaths from all diseases) * 100
= (400 / 8691) * 100 = 4.60
Explanation: Deaths due to HIV/AIDs in The Bronx is definitely more than in Manhattan. Comparison here is pretty obvious as the numerator in both cases remaining same, the smaller number in denominator of The Bronx says that of the total deaths though small than Manhattan, people dying due to HIV/AIDs is more than Manhattan proportionately. Local Governement Hospital needs to work more in The Bronx with awareness campaigns of a HIV/AIDs virus. Awareness campaign is powerful weapon in controlling HIV/AIDS.
