Question
The results of the lab experiments are shown in Figure 4. What inferences can be drawn about competition between the carnivore morphs of these two species? Carnivores 16 S.bombifrons S. multiplicata 12 P-0.0021 P 0.016 Pure sp Mixed sp. Pure sp. Mixed sp Experimental group Figure 4 Evidence of differential competitive abilities of two species (Spea bombifrons and S. multiplicata, both carnivore morphs) when reared in the laboratory. Shown is mean (:SD) change in snout-vent length of tadpoles when reared with a conspecific (pure-species group) or a heterospecific (mixed-species group). The tadpoles were fed fairy shrimp and detritus.Explanation / Answer
Ans:
Based on the graph, following inference can be drawn:
When these two species are grown together (S. bombifrons? and S. multiplicata?) then due to character displacement phenotypic divergence of species is favored. As a result, the average snout-vent length of S. bombifrons tadpole carnivore morphs species increases from ~7.8mm to 9.8mm when grown along with mixed species as compared to when these are grown only with pure species.
On the other hand, the average snout-vent length of the S. mulitplicata carnivore morphs species decreases from ~6mm to 4.2mm when grown along with mixed species as compared to when these are grown only with pure species.
This variability in growth features can be attributed to the phenomenon of polyphenism which arises due to their differential feeding behavior.
